Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for 300 hours per year in Years 7 to 10.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

In Year 11 and 12, courses available include:

  • Community and Family Studies
  • Exploring Early Childhood
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
  • Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation Studies.

Sport

Normal sport at Kyogle High School includes a wide variety of competitive and non-competitive sports, which students may choose. Each Term students select a sport and stay with it for that term. Any changes need to be approved by the Sports Organisers.

A permission note for the selected sport is sent home with students for parents/caregivers to sign and return to Front Office or Sports Organisers. Some sports chosen have a cost each week and students are committed to paying this.

Sports choices vary each term and can include: Archery; Basketball; Cricket; Golf; Hockey; Lawn Bowls; Netball; Skateboarding; Soccer; Squash; Tennis; T Ball; Touch Football; Volleyball; Water Polo; Water Volleyball; Walking; Yoga.

Some of these are only offered if there is an instructor available or on a seasonal basis

For Term 1, all Year 7 do Lifesaving for Sport.

School uniform should always be worn at sport.

For sports held outside of school grounds, students meet with their teacher at the end of Lunch 2 Wednesday, for roll marking and are supervised as they walk to their venue. Students return to school for final roll marking and in time for last bell at 3.29pm.

Students who for medical reasons cannot take part in sport will not be given passes to go home for the afternoon. A room is allocated at school where students go and do quiet activities.

Carnivals

The students are allocated to a ‘House' group at the beginning of Year 7 and remain in this house until they finish school. The four houses are Richmond (Red), Fegan (Blue), Larkin (Yellow) and Lindesay (Green).  All of the houses have had strong champions in many fields over the history of the school and many students have competed at State level.

The School Swimming Carnival is held in Term 1.  The School Athletics and Cross Country Carnival are held in Term 2. All students should join in and compete, barrack for their house and take part in novelty events. Zone and Regional and Combined Carnivals follow our School Carnival.
