NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

What’s next after high school?

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

Premier highlights the value of public education

Kiama and Parramatta public schools hosted the launch of Education Week today.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, with (from left): Education Minister Rob Stokes; State Member for Parramatta, Geoff Lee; Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott; student performers and comperes, and the Principal of Parramatta Public School, Gail Charlier (far right).

Public education can be the springboard to the top job in New South Wales.

That was the message from the Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, as she launched Education Week celebrations today at Parramatta and Kiama public schools.

"I know that all schools across the state today are highlighting and celebrating what we all value in public education – where someone like me who couldn't speak a word of English when she started school has somehow ended up being the Premier of NSW," she said.

Ms Berejiklian said she had met many possible future leaders during her visit to Parramatta Public School and "couldn't be prouder, as your Premier, to witness the outstanding achievements of all the students across the state".

The dual school launch, linked via a live simulcast, focused on the theme of Education Week, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, which highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the launch was hosted entirely by primary school students and featured student performances from Eastwood Public School violinist Justine Zhang, Bossley Park High School soloist Ezra Loau and dancers from Hoxton Park Public School.

Year 8 students from Kiama High School – Alira Morgan, Jannali Morgan and Olivia Talbott – opened the celebration with an Acknowledgement of Country performed in language.

Keynote speeches were delivered from Kiama by Terara Public School Year 6 student Lucy Boundy, Molly Chapman, a Year 8 student at Dapto High School, and Nowra East Public School instructional leader Vishanti Govender.

Lucy told the launch that education was about opportunity: "Opportunity to learn, opportunity to improve and opportunity to make a difference."

In detailing her early struggles with learning, Molly said a more hands-on approach to study at her high school had a huge impact on her.

"I learn more effectively by seeing and doing things because it gets in my head more easily and pictures are worth a thousand words. Thanks to school, I'm exceeding in almost everything I touch," she said.

Education Minister Rob Stokes highlighted the "incredible legacy" of public schools on society, a role contemporary education and educators would play in the future.

"We are in a period of vast technological, social and economic change, and with that the role of education becomes more important, even bigger, and the challenge for teachers and students becomes more complex," he said.

"We need to provide training in those skills that recognise the future is uncertain and to train and encourage young people not just to be ready for the change that is coming but to be excited by it."

Education Week 2018 - Today's schools creating tomorrow's world

The future of education will be showcased in NSW public schools from August 6 – 10 as students, teachers and parents across the state celebrate Education Week 2018.

Education Week kicks off on Monday, August 6, with a simultaneous launch at Parramatta and Kiama public schools livestreamed on YouTube so all government schools and their communities can join in.

This year's theme, Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world, highlights how NSW public schools are equipping young people with the skills and capabilities they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

For the first time the Education Week launch will be hosted by primary school students and will feature a dancing robot, student performances and a film highlighting how schools are working with their communities to solve real-world problems.

A highlight of the week is the Game Changer Challenge, in which 16 teams of students from schools across NSW will compete in a three-day design program, working alongside leading industry professionals to create the school of the future.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said today's students were learning at a time of great change.

"From the far west to our metropolitan hubs and everywhere in between, our state's schools will celebrate not only what we've achieved, but the future we are creating," Ms Berejiklian said.

"We are living in a time when the traditional walls of the classroom are opening up to new worlds of learning, paving the way for students to connect and collaborate with their peers regionally and globally."

Education Minister Rob Stokes said there had never been a more exciting time to be involved in schools with technology reshaping the way students learn and billions of dollars being invested in new school infrastructure.

"The NSW Department of Education is continually striving for improvement and innovation so that the young people in our care learn in a world-class education system," Mr Stokes said.

"The NSW Government is supporting that vision through a record $6 billion in funding to build the classrooms and schools of the future."

The Secretary of the Department of Education Mark Scott said ensuring today's students had the skills they would need to "not just survive, but thrive" in the future underpinned the department's evidence-based approach to learning.

"I am incredibly proud of the innovative teaching and learning that is being done across our State's public schools to ensure that every student can perform to their full potential," Mr Scott said.

"We don't know what the future will hold, but we do know that we are focused on equipping today's students with the skills and knowledge they will need to lead fulfilling lives in the future."

New uniform policy for NSW public schools

A new uniform policy has been introduced for NSW public schools, which for the first time include the option for girls to wear shorts and pants.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes, announced the new "clear and concise" policy today at Condell Park Public School in Sydney.

Ms Berejiklian said the "modern makeover" would ensure that uniforms were practical and comfortable for students and affordable for parents.

The new policy says all students should have the opportunity to access the full range of school activities while wearing a school uniform, including physical activities, and girls must have the option to wear shorts and pants.

For more information, read the media release by the Premier and Minister. The new policy and implementation guidelines (PDF 116.83KB) are available on the department's website.

The Department of Education supports the wearing of school uniform to promote a sense of belonging for students and create a positive identity for the school community.

Each public school decides on its school uniform in formal consultation with students, school staff, parents and the school community.

Lowana Davies, Kyogle School captain 2013 is currently studying BioMedical Science at the University of Queensland under a scholarship win with the Science and Industry Endowment Fund, SIEF.

The heavily contested scholarship was awarded to Lowana because she demonstrated the greatest merit based on a combination of eligibility requirements; particularly her academic achievements, leadership qualities and involvement in her local community. The scholarship assists Lowana to the value of $8000.00 for each year she studies over the next four years.

This scholarship win is testament to a students ongoing hard work through out their schooling life. I urge all students to try their best in class and participate in extra curricular activities as they can and will be rewarded in the end.

On Friday the 14th March, six students and one teacher bravely shaved their heads to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation as part of World's Greatest Shave.

Billy McQueen, Brandon Graham, Bobby Thomas, Dot Mercer, Lauren Tearle, and Cedar Oboidhogo joined Ms Gould in raising over $2300 with the help of a very enthusiastic school.

Jack Chater, Nathaniel Marshall and Kyle Armstrong also chose to particpate by colouring their hair for the occasion.

We would like to thank Amanda O'Reilly from Hairport for giving up her time and her amazing work in completing so many shaves in such a short period of time.

If you would like to donate to this worthy cause and support our staff and students please contact the school.

Jay Kapodistrias has done it once again! On Saturday 8th March he represented Kyogle High School and Kyogle Lions Club in the Zone 1-A Final ‘Youth of the Year Quest'. He was met with fierce competition from 4 other contestants vying for the prestigious title. After a rigorous day of panel interviews and then participating in the answering of 2 impromptu questions followed by presenting his 5 minute prepared speech to the audience, Jay was announced one of the three winners on the day. Jay will now be representing Kyogle at the Regional Finals at Lennox Head on Saturday 15th March. Jay's powerful speech on the effects of Bullying and what we as a community can do to help eradicate this social epidemic was listened to intently by the audience. Jay's commitment to his community involvement with youth, and him recently accepting a position on the Youth Parliament Council I believe are just the beginnings of many great things this young man will be renowned for. I would like to extend my congratulations to Jay for his achievement on winning the Zone Final and wish him all the best for the Regional Finals this Saturday.

The winners of the fishing competition for Term 4 2013 were Bailey Talbot, Adam Little and Sherman Everitt. Bailey placed first in the bait fishing competition with Adam one fish behind placing second. Sherman took out the lure fishing competition with two bass from below the weir. The hot battle was in the bait fishing competition with Bailey trailing Adam by two fish coming into the final week. On the last day of sport the two fished long and hard with Adam catching and releasing ten fish and Bailey triumphing with thirteen fish to take out the title. This year hard body lures were the prizes donated by Mr Stewart, Mr Kelly and Mr O'Meara. This year's group for fishing were great with many exciting catches and releases. The carp unfortunately were elusive and across the group no person landed one of the pests. The river provided many herring and mullet this year with few eels and catfish caught.

Kyogle High School is one step closer to politics in Canberra after Year 11 student, Jay Kapodistrias, was successful in becoming a Member of the Youth Parliament for 2014. Jay will give North Coast youth a voice in the running of NSW being a spokesperson for the opinions and concerns of young people. He will work with Thomas George on youth current affairs within the region. The youth parliament is run by young people for young people with aims of promoting youth led advocacy, active community leadership and legal and parliamentary education. Jay is no stranger to leadership activities excelling himself in all areas within the school and the wider Kyogle community. He recently won the Kyogle Lions Youth of the Year award.

Jay commenced 2013 at the Australian Youth Climate Coalition in Melbourne, followed by the National Leadership Camp in Sydney, the GRIP Leadership Conference in Tweed Heads and all the while being the President of the SRC, along with creating and delivering an anti- bullying peer run program (KID) within the school. Jay is also an active member of community organisations such as KEY (Kyogle Enterprising Youth) that stages youth musical events. He also works part time in hospitality. Watch out Canberra!

A group of year 10 and 11 students attended the North Coast National from the 17th to 19th of October. Students attended an educational day on the Thursday to learn many aspects of cattle preparation, how to judge cattle and how to parade them properly.

On Friday Students led the Kyogle High School Calves in the School Led Steer competition which included schools from our region and Interstate. Our Calves presented very well and the students did a great job showing them off.

Saturday was an early start with students getting to the showgrounds at 5.30am. The cattle had to be washed and weighed for the Open Steer Competition at 8:30am. Again the leaders of the cattle did an excellent job and presented the cattle well.

I would like to thank Shania Carter, Nikita Steller, Jenna Watts, Nellanne Smith and Tiarra Birkbeck for their commitment and presentation over these three days. These students represented Kyogle High School exceptionally and did all they could to ensure a successful Show in 2013.

I would also like to thank Donna Steller along with Mark and Karen Carter who transported students back and forth to Lismore each day. Without parental support these excursions are much harder to organise successfully.

Over the past few years Northern Landcare Support Service have been running a trapping program to address the problem of Indian Myna birds that are a feral pest in our area. Indian Mynas destroy the eggs of native birds, take over their nests, yet only lays eggs in 1 of them. The Boys Group and supervising teacher Mr Harpers at Kyogle High School constructed a number of traps for the program.

Due to the large number of Indian Mynas being trapped, Kyogle Council requested bigger traps to be used at their waste facility and provided the High School with the materials to complete the project.Bob Jarman from Northern Landcare commented, "It is a real community effort; with Landcare organising the traps built by Kyogle High School and Kyogle Council purchasing the wire. The dump is a hotspot for the Indian Mynas and the lads had caught 110 Indian Mynas prior to the delivery of the large trap."

The first musical for Kyogle High School in many years, Bugsy Malone has proved to be a great success, leading the way for successive productions in the future.

Lead performers, Misty Lee, Eli Harper, Isabelle Slater, Lucy Cormick and Kleon Toffetti need to be congratulated for a fabulous effort on the huge job that needed to be delivered and indeed was.

The students, including both cast and stage crew worked beautifully on stage together. Performers: Claudia Barnard, Amber Bryant, Kirra Harrison, Ellie Davies, Louise Donnelly, Toni Durrant, Mivi Evans, Emma Foy-Upton, Rory Haydock, Meagan Herd, Billie Jeffries, Wenonah Keys, Oak Landers, Maricar Martizano, Holly Mitchell, Harry Waddington, Angus Wallace and Nicholas Cage demonstrated the ability to keep in character at all times and remember their lines.

A great laugh was had from Livinia Graham and Cate Casteldine, who were on the night a favourite, with their ‘Laurel and Hardy' type escapades across the stage.

Thanks also to Bastian Gray, Zane Hugo and Tom Masters for behind the stage support.

With a new digital sound and lighting system being installed this week, kudos must go to senior students Jay Kapodistrias and Ethan Reilly for their commitment in learning the system in such a short time to help in the success and professional outcome of the show.

Congratulations must be given to Director Bobbie Sharpe and Assistant Director Leila Gray for their tireless efforts. School productions such as these don't just happen; they take teachers with passion and vision, along with a little bit of patience.

The Kids in Community Awards are an annual celebration of the amazing accomplishments young people bring to our society. This prestigious night highlights and acknowledges the challenges and success in many young people's lives and is an inspirational evening for youth and adults alike. Kyogle High School had eight admirable nominees at this event, which was held at the Lismore Worker's Club on Tuesday 17th September. These students were nominated in the following categories; Chelsea Mills in ‘Caring for Others', Jasmyne Carr in ‘Raising Funds for Charity', Kleon Toffetti and Maricar Martizano in ‘Enriching Community Life', Lilliana Bowen, Jay Kapodistrias and Kimberly Langley in ‘Leading their Peers' and Jamahlee Evans in ‘Achieving Against All Odds'. All of these young people are highly deserving of their nominations as they contribute in a positive way to our world and local community, as well as displaying remarkable traits such as resilience, maturity and motivation. As an added bonus, two of our illustrious students took out the major awards in their sections. Jay Kapodistrias and Jamahlee Evans (both in Year 11) received the overall prize for their nominated areas and Jamahlee was also invited to an all-expenses-paid conference in Sydney hosted by Rachael Ward and Bryan Brown. As Jay and Jamahlee took to the stage to receive their prizes an excited (and large) group of Kyogle supporters cheered them on, loudly. Tears and smiles abounded as the night culminated with this wonderful and well-deserved acknowledgement of some of our incredible students. Congratulations to all the nominees, you deserve it!

Kyogle High School is hosting a Trivia Night on Friday September 6th as its major fundraiser for 2013. The MC is Comedian Mandy Nolan and with the theme being ‘Back to School' the night is sure to be a hoot! The money raised will be used to set up a Leadership Fund within the school that can be accessed by students to take part in creative, cultural, academic and sporting activities. Many of our students are becoming part of a global community and increasing their leadership skills by attending conferences, sporting events and youth forums all over the Nation. Students return from these valuable experiences inspired, motivated and belonging to a larger network of like-minded people. Being able to access these events is a ‘growth' experience for students living rurally. These students are the future of our community and the funds raised from the Trivia night will support their talents.

As well as the fundraising element, we want this event to develop Kyogle community relationships. We envisage this to be an annual event that involves parents, businesses and the wider community. Tickets can be purchased at Gateway Office Supplies and the school office. Get a team together and ‘come back to school' to support the youth of our community. Alternatively, if you can't come on the night and would like to help out, perhaps make a donation that would be suitable for prizes on the night.

Kyogle High School U16's Rugby League team competed in the CRL's Titan's Shield Preliminary Round. This involves the team playing three twenty-five minute games in two pools of three schools from the area. Our pool consisted of St Josephs Woodlawn and Casino High. Its was a tough ask to meet Woodlawn first up but after a slow start the team muscled and began to dominate play. Woodlawn were the first to score with a wide cut-out pass resulting in a try. Jeremy Parker struck back with the equaliser, but as Woodlawn had scored first a tied game would give them victory. The boy's really dug deep and in the dying minutes Angus Keys shot through a hole and raced 50 metres to score the winning try. KHS Victory no.1.

Casino was our next opponent and these guys really wanted a win. KHS had to fight for every ball and make every tackle. We were soon rewarded with a try but Casino came back with one of their own and we were all tied up at full-time. Under the rules of the Titan's Shield, KHS scored first and won the game. KHS Victory no.2.

The final game of the round saw us matched against the winners of Pool B, Trinity College. Again the boys came out guns blazing and soon posted a couple of quick tries. Trinity tried but had no answer to KHS and full time saw a score of 4-0 to Kyogle. KHS Victory no.3

KHS now advances to the final round of the Titan's Shield to be played in Ballina on Tuesday 13th August to play the winners of the other preliminary rounds. MVP was difficult as everybody lifted in the games. Kudos to Jai Slater as Captain for the three games and all the boys who scored and defended to gain those sweet victories. Go the Brolgas :).

On Wednesday, 5th June, KHS girls from Year 9 made the trip out to Toonumbar Waters Retreat for a day filled with activties and information centred around cyberbullying, relationships and sexual health. Local health care professionals and youth workers presented sessions to the group and the girls were very responsive and inquisitive to the important information they were receiving. They were then treated to a beautiful morning tea and lunch catered for by the staff at Toonumbar Waters and finished off the day with a relaxation session. A big thankyou to all the staff and professionals who offered thier time and services on the day and as always, thankyou to NSW North Coast Area Health Service for providing funding to ensure all students had access to attend this valuable day.

Last Tuesday, 21st May, our Opens and U14 Rugby League teams took on Richmond River HS in the 2nd round of the statewide knockout at New Park, Kyogle.

The Opens team played an expansive fast running game in a bid to combat the much larger opposition forward pack. Aaron Davies stood tall as he led a younger, lighter forward pack with several inspirational runs and rattling defence. Angus Keys and Jerome Elefsen worked tirelessly in defence and made ground with the ball. A much smaller Kyogle HS backline was well organised by Hayden Pratt and Jeremy Parker (who scored 4 tries) in the halves, who provided good service to fullback Nathan Farragher whose speed and strength was a delight to watch. Well done to the boys in Yr 9 and 10 who stood tall in the face of older, larger opposition. Final Score : Kyogle 42 (J Parker 4, N Farragher 2, J Elefsen, J Christian tries A Davies 2, C Ludwig 3 goals)def Richmond River 18. The boys now play away at Maclean HS on Friday 31st May

The U14's Buckley Shield team won their second round of this statewide competition over a challenging Richmond River team. Our forwards dominated the match with some early pressure from Hayden Lamond and Adam Little supported by our mobile backline. Kyogle won the game 28 points to 10. We are waiting for the results of other games to determine our R3 opponents. A big thanks to the KJRLFC for the use of NewPark and Sam and Jack Nicholson for their refereeing skills.

On Saturday 25th May, Year 9 and 10 students attended the Beef Week Hook and Hoof competition in Casino. Kyogle High was one of a number of schools to represent at the competition from parts of New South Wales and Queensland.

During first semester, two year 9/10 classes broke in and prepared a number of calves to be shown. Of the calves prepared, three were taken on Saturday morning and led in the Hoof competition. The students that attended on Saturday groomed and prepared the calves immaculately and presented them well.

The cattle were then auctioned later in the morning before being transported to the Casino Meatworks. On Tuesday the results of the Hook competition will be available and the students will be able to see how well the calves met the desired market specifications.

I would like to thank all the students involved in preparing the cattle and to those who turned up on Saturday to make our efforts possible. I would also like to thank those who supply us with calves which allow us to make these learning opportunities available to students.

Thursday 16th May, saw our Year 11 Peer Support Leaders spending the day gaining the knowledge and skills required to deliver valuable Anti-Bullying information to our Year 7 students in Peer Support sessions throughout the term.
The session and the program in its entirety also advocates positive relationships within the school. This is highly evident as Year 7 students are in touch with their older peers on a daily basis. It has created great relationships and connections that will continue throughout their schooling.
This day is yet another, that teachers Brad and Rachel Razborsec have developed in conjunction with the Peer Leadership Program to help with the big issues and also the transition of our junior cohort to their new school environment.
Following this program our leaders will run the ‘BULLY NO WAY' day to students from our feeder schools next term.

For the second consecutive year, Kyogle High School is playing a major role in the Kyogle Engagemant and Enrichment program.

KEEP was developed as a response to the needs of the top 20% of students across the Kyogle area.

The program caters for gifted and talented students in Years 5-7 by providing challenging classroom experiences in a supported environement.

During Term One the 23 students developed their creative side by particiapting in a day of drama activities and more recently they have attended a day in the Kyogle High School labs.

Ex-senior science teacher Mr Jeff Marriott gave up his time to deliver an exciting program alongside science teacher Ms Lindy Ruangsri, that included both practical activites alongside meaningful discussion. The class was fast moving and covered a multitude of tasks, including distillation as a means of separating substances, various microscope activities with the inclusion of written activities.

The students were supported by Year 10 peer support leaders, which provided another primary to high school transition experience.

Student leaders toured the school with our visitors, giving them the opportunity to participate in various activities, chat with teachers and view facilities such as the library, science labs, computer rooms and of course the new technology areas. A very big thankyou must go to all teachers and students involved with the smooth running of such a successful event. Emily has been invited to attend after a rigorous selection process, the UBS Young Women's Leadership Academy. The objective of the Academy is to introduce Year 11 students to a diverse group of contemporary women leaders, develop leadership skills and create new relationships with their peer group from other schools. The program is a residential one at The Women's College, Sydney University and is designed to be a creative mix of practical and theory with industry exposure, field visits and syndicate work.
